My family and Kwanzaa

My children have celebrated Kwanzaa their entire lives and its their favorite time of year.  They enjoy the big karamu (feast) I cook, they like taking turns lighting and blowing out the candles, and they LOVE opening a new gift every day.

This video from Kwanzaa 2016 reminds me how difficult it was that year to find red, black and green candles.  I ended up buying white candles and painting them with acrylic.  Thinking back, I'm not sure how safe that was lol.  Also, canned corn?  That was a struggle table indeed but the holiday isn't about what you spend.  Its about coming together.

Discussing the principle of each day is a great way to reinforce lessons we teach our kids throughout the year about working together, being creative problem solvers and taking care of their community.  Kwanzaa isn't just my children's favorite time of year.  Its my favorite too.
